ADHD Traits in Mind

What it is: ADHD is defined as Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder. Attention deficient generally means that one’s focus and concentration is deficient in one’s mental development. Hyperactivity is one’s level of either producing or requiring either or any and all of visual, physical, or audible stimuli above what ‘normal’ people or children usually handle.

As with all disorders there are varying degrees of severity, but just because it is not severe does not mean it is to be dismissed, it just means it’s easier to manage. In fact ADHD was not officially a mental disorder until the late 1960’s but ever since then the awareness of it has increased. Before that, it was usually recognized in a person by their lack of morals and maturity, and in conservative Christian circles ADHD is still debated over regarding that. Nonetheless, ADHD has become and remained a very real issue for those like I who deal with it daily. I live with the following traits which are not exhaustive or even exclusive to ADHD, but are commonly found in those who live with the disorder. Some of my difficult behavioral traits are:

  • Easily Distracted
  • Jumping topics (stream of thought conversations)
  • Constantly having to move or do something
  • Impulsive, spontanious, energetic
  • Sudden and strong emotional mood swings
  • Interruptive, talkative, ‘improper’ social etiquette
  • Forgetfulness especially in basic tasks
  • May miss social cues, subtle hints, or certain types of ’humor’
  • above average intelligence
  • specific talents (i.e. in areas of art, writing, mathmatics, logic or abstract concepts, and technologies)
  • Retains random knowledge of events and activities and people, even conversations
  • Active imagination if guided can lead to creativity

However, along with the more difficult aspects of ADHD, there are special traits that can be found too:

  • above average intelligence
  • specific talents (i.e. in areas of art, writing, mathmatics, logic or abstract concepts, and technologies)
  • Retains random knowledge of events and activities and people, even conversations
  • Active imagination if guided can lead to creativity
